What is The Colonies?
The Colonies is an online, text based, multiplayer game and community. It is also a tick based game, and the best way to describe ourselves to gamers that are not knowledgeable about our genre of game is to say we are a combination of a strategy game like Master of Orion 2 and a text based game. When you login you will have a control panel with various screens letting you do numerous things. You need to research and construct technologies in order to build space units and warriors to defend and attack both your colony and other players.
At the greatest TC had over 1500 players, but today we can not match those numbers. Much of the lost players is due to the lack of interest in browser based strategy games with almost no graphics. So to keep the game alive we all need to pitch in and recruit new players that can see the value of a game like TC. Most people are not aware of it, but the skill level required for a game like TC is much higher than any FPS game you can find. You need to have skills in many areas, like diplomacy as well as in mathematics, and a sense for the cunning tactics you need to deploy.
What are the objectives?
The main objective of the game is to have the highest score at the end of each round (usually lasting several months). In between the beginning and end of the round there will be a number of sub objectives for you to complete, such as completing research and construction, building a big fleet, attacking other players, and also stealing as many mines as you can. There are many strategies for achieving this goal but we suggest you get some friends to play too so you can help each other out, or join one of the existing teams or (like TFD).
How do I make a group?
During the sign up phase before the game actually starts, we allow groups to be created, this can simply be done by selecting "create group" on the sign up page. When you do this, we will send the password that others can use to join that group to your ingame mail.
